History and character

Streamsong is the most surprising golf destination in Florida — a stark, treeless dunescape conjured from reclaimed phosphate-mining land in the middle of the state by The Mosaic Company, with the first courses opening in 2012. The towering sand ridges, lakes, and native scrub feel nothing like the palm-lined courses elsewhere in the state, reading instead like a Sandhills or links environment improbably set inland. The original two layouts were designed by the era's leading minimalists: Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw built the Red, while Tom Doak built the Blue, and the two intertwine over the same wild terrain. Gil Hanse later added the bold, more strategic Black on its own parcel, completing a 54-hole complex that draws serious golfers willing to make the trek into rural Polk County.

When to go

Florida's pleasant golf season runs from late fall through spring (November through April), when humidity drops, temperatures are comfortable, and the dunescape is at its firmest and most playable. This is also peak demand, so book lodging and tee times ahead. Summer is hot, humid, and prone to daily afternoon thunderstorms, but it brings the lowest rates and quiet tee sheets for those who can tolerate the heat and play early. Streamsong encourages walking with caddies year-round, which is far more enjoyable in the cooler months.

Cost and who it is for

Streamsong sits in the upper-mid range: peak green fees run a few hundred dollars per course, and the on-site lodge offers stay-and-play packages that make a 54-hole weekend efficient. Resort guests get preferential tee times and rates over outside play. It suits the architecture-minded golfer who wants three top-100-caliber courses in one place, buddies trips chasing big-mileage days, and anyone who wants a links-style experience without leaving the United States. It is less of a fit for golfers expecting Florida's usual cart-golf-and-beach formula — Streamsong is a destination for the game itself.

What to pair it with

Streamsong is roughly an hour from both Tampa and Orlando, so it pairs easily with a city stay or a beach add-on at the start or end of a trip. Thematically it belongs with the great sand-built destinations: it shares DNA with Bandon Dunes on the Oregon coast and with the Sandhills heritage of Pinehurst, making a natural trio for golfers touring America's best modern minimalist design. Within the Southeast it also rounds out a Lowcountry swing alongside Sea Island or Kiawah Island for those combining dunescape golf with coastal resort play. The on-site dining and spa make it comfortable to base there for several nights.
