History & character

Kiawah Island is a barrier-island resort south of Charleston defined by one of the most famous and ferocious courses in modern golf: Pete Dye's Ocean Course. Built for the 1991 Ryder Cup — the unforgettable “War by the Shore” — and host to two PGA Championships, including Phil Mickelson's historic 2021 win at age 50, the Ocean Course runs ten holes directly along the Atlantic and is regularly rated the toughest resort course in America. Beyond it, Kiawah offers four more well-regarded layouts (Turtle Point, Osprey Point, Oak Point, and Cougar Point), all set within a low-key, environmentally protected island of maritime forest and beach.

When to go

Spring and fall are ideal. April through June and September through October bring warm, pleasant days and the best conditions, with spring delivering blooming color and fall offering thinner crowds. Summer is hot, humid, and busy with beach families, while the wind on the exposed Ocean Course can swing from a gentle aid to a brutal test in any season — it is part of the experience. Winter is mild but breezy and cool on the coast, and it brings the year’s lowest rates for travelers who do not mind bundling up between shots.

Cost & who it's for

Kiawah is a high-end resort destination, and the Ocean Course commands a premium to match its reputation — peak rounds run roughly $300-400 (with a discount for resort guests), while the other four courses are more approachable in the $150-250 range. It rewards serious golfers who want to test themselves against a genuine championship layout, but it also works for couples and families thanks to the beaches, the elegant Sanctuary hotel, and the island's villa rentals. Charleston International Airport is about an hour away, making access simple from most of the country.

What to pair it with

The standout pairing is historic Charleston, just 45 minutes away, with its acclaimed restaurants, antebellum architecture, and easy day or evening trips that give a Kiawah golf week real cultural depth. For golfers building a longer Southeast coastal swing, Kiawah links naturally with Hilton Head Island and Sea Island, Georgia to the south, forming a three-stop tour of the region's finest resort golf. The nearby Charleston-area public courses can also round out the itinerary if you want extra rounds without paying Ocean Course prices.
