Why it matters
Red Tail occupies the old Fort Devens land 45 minutes northwest of Boston and is consistently the best-conditioned public course in the metro area. Brian Silva's routing rewards strategic play more than power; the greens are honest and the conditioning is closer to private-club than typical daily-fee. The smartest alternative when the in-city / harbor courses are full.
How to play it
Bookable in advance. Walkable easily; cart standard but not required. Weekday morning tee times are the value play.
