History and character

Bandon Trails, opened in 2005, is the resort's great change of pace — the one course at Bandon that turns its back on the ocean and journeys inland through three distinct landscapes. Designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, the most revered minimalist partnership in the game, it begins in open coastal dunes, climbs into a dense pine and fir forest, and emerges into rolling meadow before returning. That variety makes it feel like a walk through the natural history of the property, and its sheltered routing offers welcome relief from the relentless wind of the clifftop courses. Many regulars rank it as the most underrated layout at Bandon, a quieter, more intimate test that grows on you with every round.

The round and signature holes

The opening drive from an elevated tee down into a vast dune bowl sets the tone, one of the great starting holes in American golf. The short par-four 14th is a Coore & Crenshaw classic, a drivable temptation guarded by a perched, severely contoured green that punishes greed. The closing par-three 17th and uphill par-four 18th bring the round to a dramatic finish, climbing back toward the dunes. Because the routing moves through forest and meadow, the wind is far less of a factor than elsewhere on property, so the defense shifts to the firm fairways, the cleverly tilted greens, and the demand to position your tee shot for the best angle in.

When to go and how to get on

June through October is the prime window for weather and long days, with the shoulder seasons offering cheaper, quieter golf and a little more risk of rain. Bandon Trails is fully public and bookable by anyone, with resort guests getting priority tee times and the best stay-and-play rates. Because it is the most sheltered course at the resort, it is a smart choice for an afternoon round when the wind is howling on the bluffs, or for a day when the group wants a slightly gentler, more scenic walk. As always at Bandon, a caddie helps with the green contours and the inland routing, and waterproof layers are essential.

Who it is for

Bandon Trails is for the golfer who appreciates variety and the Coore & Crenshaw touch — strategic, walkable, and beautifully natural, with a routing that surprises at every turn. It is the perfect counterpoint within a five-course Bandon week, giving the legs and the nerves a break from the clifftop exposure of Pacific Dunes and the original course. It is almost never played as a standalone destination; it is one chapter of the full resort experience. For travelers chasing the great minimalist sand courses, it shares its design pedigree with the Coore & Crenshaw work at Streamsong and rounds out a portfolio that pairs naturally with Pebble Beach.
