England's golf is split between two completely different worlds. The Open rota links — Royal Birkdale, Royal Lytham, Royal St George's, Royal Liverpool — line the Lancashire, Sefton, and Kent coasts. The London heathland — Sunningdale, Wentworth, Walton Heath, Swinley Forest, the Berkshire — sit in a 30-mile triangle southwest of the city. The two together make a 10-day pilgrimage that no other country can match: links seven days, heathland three, finish with a London week.
What makes England different from Scotland is the heathland tradition. Sunningdale, Wentworth West, Walton Heath, Swinley Forest — none of them are links courses, but the sandy turf, pine and heather rough, and 1900s-1920s designer pedigree (Harry Colt, Herbert Fowler) put them in the same world-class category. They're also member-only or member-friend-only at the top end, which is the catch. Sunningdale visitors play Old or New only by member invite or via the visiting-club arrangement; Wentworth West is BMW PGA Championship setup only.
The links side is more accessible. Royal Birkdale (Southport, 30 minutes from Liverpool) hosts the Open every 4-5 years and is genuinely public — book 6 months out for the marquee weekends. Royal Liverpool (Hoylake) and Royal Lytham are also publicly bookable. Royal St George's at Sandwich is the southern Open venue, 90 minutes east of London on a day trip. The smart play is a Lancashire links 3-day base + a London weekend, with a single day at one of the heathland courses if your contacts allow.

When to go

Getting there
- MAN · Manchester50 min to Southport driveThe default for Lancashire links access. Direct from JFK, EWR, ATL, ORD, MIA, plus most of Europe. Larger and more flight inventory than Liverpool.
- LPL · Liverpool30 min to Southport driveCloser but limited international service — Ryanair and easyJet within Europe, no direct from US. Useful only if connecting through London or Dublin.
- LHR · London Heathrow1h 30m to Sunningdale driveThe London end. Direct from every major US hub. 90 minutes to Walton Heath, 75 to Sunningdale. The Lancashire connection is a 2h 30m direct train from Euston.
Use trains. London-Manchester is 2h 30m direct from Euston, and trains within the Lancashire links circuit are 20-40 minutes between stops. A rental car only saves time if you're combining Lancashire + Yorkshire courses (not on this itinerary).

- New York (JFK) → LHR7h direct (every major US carrier)
- New York (JFK) → MAN7h direct (American, Virgin)

- WinterCold (40-50°F), wet, short days. London courses still playable but the Lancashire links go off-rota.
FAQ
Can I really play Sunningdale or Wentworth as a visitor?
Sunningdale: only via a member host or one of the rare 'guest-of-club' visiting weeks. Wentworth West: only during the BMW PGA Championship setup days (rare) or via a member. Sunningdale Old (the heathland masterpiece) is the one most visitors are chasing — plan via your member contacts or skip it and play Walton Heath instead, which is publicly bookable and almost equal in quality.
Lancashire links or London heathland — which is the right England trip?
Both, ideally. The Lancashire links is the unique-to-England experience (the Open rota courses are world-class). The London heathland is the rarer access challenge (mostly member-only at the top). A 6-day combined trip is the smart play: 3 days Lancashire + 1 day train + 2 days London with Walton Heath or Royal St George's.
How do I book Royal Birkdale?
Direct via the Royal Birkdale website. Book 6 months out for weekends in peak season, 3-4 months out for weekdays. The course is true public — no member-friend requirements — but availability is competitive. Confirm tee times by email and bring a printed confirmation.
England + Scotland in one trip?
Yes. The natural circuit is Manchester → Southport links → Lancashire to Edinburgh by train (4h direct) → St Andrews. Total 10 days, 8 marquee rounds, no flights between countries. Use trains throughout — the LNER Edinburgh line is one of the great rail journeys.
Do I need a caddie?
Strongly recommended on the Open rota. Royal Birkdale, Royal Liverpool, Royal Lytham, Royal St George's — all have caddie programs and the local knowledge matters on a wet day with a 25-mph wind. £80-120 per round plus tip.
