England (Open Rota + London Heathland)

England's golf is split between two completely different worlds. The Open rota links — Royal Birkdale, Royal Lytham, Royal St George's, Royal Liverpool — line the Lancashire, Sefton, and Kent coasts. The London heathland — Sunningdale, Wentworth, Walton Heath, Swinley Forest, the Berkshire — sit in a 30-mile triangle southwest of the city. The two together make a 10-day pilgrimage that no other country can match: links seven days, heathland three, finish with a London week.

What makes England different from Scotland is the heathland tradition. Sunningdale, Wentworth West, Walton Heath, Swinley Forest — none of them are links courses, but the sandy turf, pine and heather rough, and 1900s-1920s designer pedigree (Harry Colt, Herbert Fowler) put them in the same world-class category. They're also member-only or member-friend-only at the top end, which is the catch. Sunningdale visitors play Old or New only by member invite or via the visiting-club arrangement; Wentworth West is BMW PGA Championship setup only.

The links side is more accessible. Royal Birkdale (Southport, 30 minutes from Liverpool) hosts the Open every 4-5 years and is genuinely public — book 6 months out for the marquee weekends. Royal Liverpool (Hoylake) and Royal Lytham are also publicly bookable. Royal St George's at Sandwich is the southern Open venue, 90 minutes east of London on a day trip. The smart play is a Lancashire links 3-day base + a London weekend, with a single day at one of the heathland courses if your contacts allow.

  11 Open Championships hosted, most recently 2012. Famous for its 200+ pot bunkers. £260 green fee — and the longest train ride from Liverpool, 1h east.

• Royal St George's (Sandwich)

  2021 Open venue, the most southern of the rota. 1h 30m east of London by train. £255 green fee, less photogenic than the Lancashire courses but harder from the back tees.

• Sunningdale (Old or New)

  The headline heathland course. Member-friend visiting policy, £300 green fee on the public visiting days (limited). Harry Colt's masterpiece, an hour southwest of London.

• Walton Heath

  Old + New courses by Herbert Fowler. 2018 + 2027 Solheim Cup venue. Publicly bookable, £225 green fee, 45 minutes south of London. The most accessible heathland round.

1. Day 01
   Land MAN or LPL, settle in Southport

   Manchester is the larger inbound airport; Liverpool is closer (30 min). Check in at the Royal Clifton or Vincent. Twilight at Hesketh or Southport & Ainsdale.

2. Day 02
   Royal Birkdale

   The marquee. Caddie strongly recommended. Lunch at the clubhouse, walk the dunes after.

3. Day 03
   Royal Liverpool

   45 minutes south to Hoylake. 2023 Open venue, the windiest of the Lancashire trio.

4. Day 04
   Train to London

   2h 30m London via Manchester. Check in at a Kensington or Mayfair hotel. Skip golf today — eat at St John, walk Hyde Park.

5. Day 05
   Walton Heath or Royal St George's

   Walton Heath is the heathland choice (45 min south by train); Royal St George's is the Sandwich Open course (1h 30m east). Both are publicly bookable.

6. Day 06
   London day, fly home

   Skip golf. Late lunch at the Wolseley, fly LHR or LGW for the evening departure.

Lancashire is cheaper than London. Southport hotels £100-220/night, London £250-500/night for centrally-located rooms. Green fees: Open rota £255-290, Walton Heath £225, off-rota Lancashire £100-180. Use trains. London-Manchester is 2h 30m direct from Euston, and trains within the Lancashire links circuit are 20-40 minutes between stops. A rental car only saves time if you're combining Lancashire + Yorkshire courses (not on this itinerary).
