Dubai built its golf scene the same way it built everything else: by hiring the best designers in the world, importing them onto reclaimed desert, and finishing them to a standard most resort destinations can't match. Eight courses now host one or more European Tour events; the Hero Dubai Desert Classic at Emirates Golf Club (Majlis) has been on the schedule since 1989, and the DP World Tour Championship finishes the European Tour season at Jumeirah Golf Estates every November. The course depth is real — and so is the cost.

What separates Dubai from European winter alternatives (Costa del Sol, Algarve) is two things. First, the climate window is wider — November through April is reliably 70-80°F with near-zero rain, and 24-hour Tour-quality conditioning means courses never enter shoulder shape. Second, the broader Dubai trip wraps around golf in a way that Sotogrande doesn't. Five-star hotels at $400-1,200/night, world-class dining, shopping that funds the operation, and a 30-minute Emirates-to-clubhouse arrival experience.

The catch is the all-in cost. Most Dubai golf weeks come in 30-50% above an equivalent Costa del Sol trip — green fees average $300-450, hotels start at $400/night for anything decent, and the city is built to extract dollars. For UK and northern-European visitors the math works (3-4 hour direct flight, no jet lag); for US visitors it's a long-haul commitment (14 hours from JFK) that pays off only as a multi-week trip combined with the Indian Ocean or an onward European stop.

Best courses

  • Jumeirah Golf Estates (Earth)

  • Yas Links (Abu Dhabi)

    Check tee times →

Kyle Phillips (2010), a 75-minute drive south. The only true links course in the Gulf — sand-blow fairways and fescue rough. $295 green fee. Worth the day trip.

  • Trump International Golf Club Dubai

Abu Dhabi (Saadiyat Island + Yas Island)

When to go

Best monthsNovember through April

Reliably 70-80°F daily highs November-March, 85°F by April, brutal 100-115°F May-October. The trip math only works in winter — most resorts run minimal operations in summer and green fees still don't drop enough to justify summer heat.

FAQ

Is Dubai golf worth the 14-hour flight from the US East Coast?

Only as part of a longer trip. Standalone Dubai golf is hard to justify from the US — the long-haul plus the all-in cost (5 nights $5K+ per person) is too much for the available course caliber, which is excellent but not pilgrimage-tier. Smart combination: Dubai 4-5 days + Maldives 4 days, or Dubai + Indian Ocean cruise, or Dubai + Europe extension. From the UK or northern Europe, Dubai is a 6-7 hour direct flight and the trip math works.

Emirates Majlis or Jumeirah Earth?

Both, on different days. Emirates Majlis is the headline historical venue (host of the Hero Dubai Desert Classic since 1989), more polished, easier tee times. Jumeirah Earth is the modern Greg Norman championship layout and the DP World Tour finale venue. They're 20 minutes apart. If only one, Majlis for the experience, Jumeirah for the design.

Stay in Dubai Marina or downtown Dubai?

Marina for golf — closer to Emirates GC, Jumeirah Golf Estates, and Trump International. Downtown (Burj Khalifa area) for sightseeing and the Address hotel collection. Most golf trips base in Marina with one downtown evening for the Burj fountain show.

Can I drink alcohol at Dubai golf clubs?

Yes — most golf clubs are licensed and clubhouse bars serve wine, beer, and spirits. Public spaces and many restaurants outside hotels are alcohol-restricted; the safe assumption is alcohol within licensed hotels, clubs, and bars only. The cultural rule is dress + behavior modesty, especially around Ramadan (timing varies year to year).

Combine Dubai with Abu Dhabi?

Yes — and it adds depth. Abu Dhabi has Yas Links (the Gulf's only true links course), Saadiyat Beach (Gary Player coastal), and the historic Abu Dhabi Golf Club. 1h 20m drive between cities on the E11. A 7-day combined Dubai + Abu Dhabi trip is the standard upper-mid-range Gulf golf trip.
