History and character

The Ailsa course at Turnberry sits on the Ayrshire coast with sweeping views of the granite dome of Ailsa Craig and the peaks of Arran, and it is one of the most scenic links in the world. It hosted the 1977 Open, the Duel in the Sun, when Tom Watson edged Jack Nicklaus in one of the greatest head-to-head finishes the game has seen, and has staged the Open three more times since. The land served as an airfield in both world wars, and you can still trace the old runways. A grand white hotel sits on the hill above, lending the whole resort an unmistakable sense of old-world luxury.

The round and signature holes

A 2016 redesign by Martin Ebert rerouted the heart of the course around the iconic lighthouse and produced one of the great stretches in links golf. The par-three ninth, named Bruce’s Castle, is now played from a tee perched on the rocks out by the lighthouse with the sea crashing below, an unforgettable and intimidating shot. The 10th and 11th hug the shoreline beneath the lighthouse before the course turns inland, and the closing holes bring the hotel back into view. Firm fairways, deep bunkers and the ever-present sea wind make club selection a constant negotiation with the elements.

When to go and how to get on

Turnberry plays best from late spring through early autumn, with May, June and September the sweet spots for firm turf, long daylight and manageable wind. The west coast catches plenty of Atlantic weather, so rain and gusts can roll in quickly even in summer, and the exposed clifftop holes are especially at the mercy of the breeze. The Ailsa is a resort course, bookable by the public, though green fees are among the highest in Scotland and priority goes to hotel guests. Staying on site is the easiest way to secure a tee time and to enjoy the full resort experience.

Who it is for and pairings

Turnberry suits the golfer who wants championship links drama wrapped in genuine luxury, and it makes a fine centrepiece for a southwest Scotland trip. Royal Troon and Prestwick, both Open venues, are a short drive up the Ayrshire coast and pair perfectly for a links-rich few days. Many travellers combine Turnberry with the east coast around St Andrews and Carnoustie for a complete Scotland tour, or use Glasgow’s nearby airport to add a hop to Northern Ireland. Either way the Ailsa rewards being savoured rather than rushed.
